The “School Portal” an AI Could Miss, and What It Could Cost Adwoa
Switching languages mid-sentence keeps the whole thought intact. Imagine Adwoa in her Kumasi kitchen, recording a voice note about a “school portal” and “deadline.” Twi carries the relationship and context. English supplies the exact terms and urgency. Together, they express one natural thought. If an AI breaks at the language switch, it may miss the action entirely. Her son could miss the deadline. Now Adwoa must slow down, translate herself, and speak for the machine. GhanaNLP designed a Twi speech-synthesis model to read English words inside Twi text.
